Funeral is funded elsewhere
A Funeral Grant must not be paid if any of the following are payable in respect of the deceased person:
- an ACC Funeral Grant -(paid when the death was caused by an accident or injury covered by ACC) or
- a Veterans Pension Lump Sum payment on death -(paid upon the death of a veteran or their partner) or
- a War Funeral Grant (paid when a qualifying veteran dies, or the surviving partner and/or dependent children are eligible for Surviving Spouse Pension or Child Pension or other similar grant)
Note a Funeral Grant cannot be used towards any remaining funeral costs that cannot be covered by the above assistance.
Determining if other funding is available
In most cases it will be clear whether or not the funeral can be funded elsewhere e.g. if a person has died as the result of an accident, they may qualify for an ACC Funeral Grant.
In cases where it is not clear whether the funeral may be funded elsewhere, MSD must request proof before a Funeral Grant can be approved.
Example 1
An application is received for a Funeral Grant. The death is not the result of an accident, and the deceased person was not a veteran.
Proof that assistance for funeral expenses is not available elsewhere is not required in this case.
Example 2
An application is received for a Funeral Grant. The applicant advises that the deceased person died as the result of an accident.
Based on this, a funeral grant under the Accident Compensation Act 2001 may be payable.
The applicant should be referred to ACC to test their eligibility.
A Funeral Grant may still be payable if the applicant provides proof that there is no eligibility to an ACC Funeral Grant.
