Total assessable assets
If a deceased person was single without children, their total assessable assets are equal to their assessable estate.
In all other situations the total assessable assets for Funeral Grant are the total of:
- the deceased person's assessable estate before the payment of any debts and
- if the deceased person is a child, the combined assets of the parents that are in excess of the asset exemption or
- if the deceased person has a surviving partner, the assets of the surviving partner that are in excess of the asset exemption
A Funeral Grant cannot be paid if the reasonable funeral expenses can be met by the total assessable assets.
Calculating total assessable assets
The total assessable assets are calculated as follows:
Surviving partner or parents total assets | $ _____ |
Less asset exemption for surviving partner or parents | $ _____ |
Equals surviving partner or parents assessable assets | $ _____ |
Add deceased person's assessable estate | $ _____ |
Equals total assessable assets | $ _____ |
