Accommodation Supplement

If a client is in an approved Ministry of Health contracted facility and receiving residential care because of a physical, intellectual, psychiatric disability or alcohol and drug problem, they cannot receive an Accommodation Supplement.

Accommodation Supplement should be stopped from the day the client entered residential care. If the client has entered residential care and their partner in the community has accommodation costs, the Accommodation Supplement needs to be re-assessed.

The exception to this is when the client has ongoing accommodation costs in the community that they are still required to meet. The client should be invited to apply for Community Costs. If Community Costs is granted, any Accommodation Supplement should stop from the day the client entered care. For more information see: Community Costs

Partner's accommodation costs

Accommodation Supplement may be paid to the partner in the community who is continuing to meet accommodation costs. The Accommodation Supplement needs to be manually re-assessed at the single or sole parent rate, but taking the income and assets of both the client and the partner into consideration.

Non contracted facilities

If the client is in a residential care facility that is not contracted or funded by the Ministry of Health, they cannot receive a Residential Support Subsidy. They may be able to receive assistance through Accommodation Supplement or Disability Allowance.
