Driver Licence
A recoverable Special Needs Grant may be made for a client to:
- get a new driver licence
- renew their driver licence
- reinstate their driver licence
- re-sit their driver licence test (after paying the initial test fee)
- reschedule their driver licence test
Note the re-sit fee only applies for Class 1 (car) drivers who have failed to pass their driver licence test twice.
A Special Needs Grant is available for all classes of driver licence.
Special Needs Grants for driver licence costs must not be more than the actual fees payable.
This assistance is not available to pay for endorsements on driver licences.
Rescheduling drivers licence tests
If a client reschedules their drivers licence test within 2 working days of their test, they may be charged a rescheduling fee.
Clients are not charged a fee if they reschedule their drivers licence test more than 2 working days (a full 48 hours) before the day of their test, or they reschedule their test online.
Where possible, clients should reschedule their test online. If clients are unable to do this online, MSD may be able to cover the rescheduling fee under a Special Needs Grant.
MSD cannot cover the costs associated with cancelling a driver's licence tests.
Assistance cannot be paid
A client will not qualify for a Special Needs Grant for driver licence costs if they:
- are disqualified from holding or getting a driver licence or
- have not renewed their driver licence before the expiry date without a good and sufficient reason
