Transition from Care to Independence

Oranga Tamariki has 'Transition from Care to Independence' initiatives in Auckland and Christchurch.

As part of the initiative, eligible clients may be able to get a Special Needs Grant to assist them with the costs of establishing themselves in the community if they:

  • are aged 16 years or over
  • have been in supported care under theĀ Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 and
  • leaves supported care to live independently and
  • have a letter from their personal advisor verifying that they are participating in a Transition from Care to Independence initiative and
  • they require a youth transition payment

The personal advisor's involvement with the young person is necessary for the client to get Special Needs Grant assistance for re-establishment of young persons aged 16 to 19, who leave care under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 to live independently.
