Full-time student's chargeable income
Chargeable income for students includes:
- Student Allowance
- Accommodation Benefit paid to students
- Independent Circumstances Allowance
- the Living Costs component of any Student Loan
The living costs component of any Student Allowance or Student Loan is included as chargeable income for Temporary Additional Support purposes. This is because the living costs component of a Student Loan is a means of financial assistance available to students to assist with their living costs.
Student Loans for course fees or course-related costs are not to be included as chargeable income.
Students must take all necessary steps to obtain all other sources of assistance that may be available, for example, the availability of financial support during the academic year under the Student Allowance and Student Loan schemes. The student must also take reasonable steps to reduce their costs or increase their income.
You should consider declining, reducing or cancelling Temporary Additional Support if these sources have not been utilised.
Parental income does not affect whether a student qualifies for Temporary Additional Support and questions about parents' income should not be asked. However, any contribution from parents for living costs, excluding lump sum gifts, should be included as chargeable income.
