Temporary Additional Support : Contents

Full-time students

Full-time students (and their partners) can get Temporary Additional Support when:

  • the student or any member of their family is getting the maximum amount of Disability Allowance and has excess disability costs or
  • the student is a beneficiary (for example, a Supported Living Payment (health condition, injury, disability or total blindness) client studying full-time)

A student getting Jobseeker Support Student Hardship is not considered a full-time student when assessing whether they qualify for Temporary Additional Support.

If a student and their partner meet the qualifications for Temporary Additional Support you may include all of their allowable costs into the assessment of Temporary Additional Support.

Student Allowance, Accommodation Benefit and the living costs component of the Student Loan are included as chargeable income for Temporary Additional Support purposes.

Student Loans for course fees or course-related costs are not included as chargeable income.

Note to qualify for Temporary Additional Support the student must take all necessary steps to obtain all other sources of assistance available, for example, financial support during the academic year under the Student Allowance and Student Loan schemes. They must also take reasonable steps to reduce their costs or increase their chargeable income.

Legislation

For Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit, the principal temporary caregiver is the person who has the primary responsibility for the day-to-day care of the child for a short-term, unknown, or uncertain period, and is not the natural or adoptive parent of the child.

For the purposes of Temporary Additional Support, a family includes the client, their spouse or partner, and any dependent children of the client or the client's spouse or partner.
