Partner in residential care
When a partner is in residential care they may qualify for Temporary Additional Support.
Either they or their partner in the community can apply for Temporary Additional Support but they are assessed as a couple with all their combined chargeable income, allowable costs and assets included in their calculation.
In these cases, it is likely that the partner in residential care may get a different benefit type from the client in the community. You would combine the net rate of each benefit type for both the chargeable income and the standard costs.
Manual calculation required to determine rate of payment
If both the client in the community and their partner in residential care meet the qualifications for Temporary Additional Support, the rate payable for Temporary Additional Support should be calculated manually as follows:
| |
Use the assets owned by both the client and partner
Include the allowable costs for the client in the community and the partner in care (excludes any accommodation costs for the client's residential care or any costs towards their residential services)
Calculate 70% of the combined unabated main benefit rates and unabated family tax credit payments
Calculate 30% of the combined unabated main benefits
Rate of payment | Assess the client as a married, civil union or de facto couple and pay the full married, civil union or de facto rate |
Note in these cases, the client in the community should be encouraged to make the application for the couple. It may be appropriate to pay the full calculated rate of Temporary Additional Support to the client in the community as they would usually manage the finances for the family.
