Permitted travel reasons

A client or partner not otherwise entitled to be paid their Emergency Benefit while absent from New Zealand may have their payments continue for up to 28 days in any 52 week period, if their travel is for one (or a combination) of, the following permitted travel reasons:

  • essential travel - to attend a significant event relating to a family member or a person who fulfils a role in relation to the client that is similar to that of a family member, that the client would reasonably be expected to attend
  • to attend a court case which the person is required to attend as a party or a witness - this is to allow clients who are required by law to attend court and supports the maintenance of the law. A client would generally be expected to provide evidence that they are required to attend a court overseas. This would include documents from the court.
  • to attend a job interview or follow up on a job prospect
  • for clients with a disability, to receive vocational training or disability assistance-dog training not available in New Zealand during the time the client is absent
  • for clients with a disability, to travel overseas for the sole or predominant purpose of competing in any overseas multinational or international Special Olympic or Paralympic Games competition
  • to provide aid or assistance to a family member immediately following a natural disaster (eg flood, earthquake, fire) or similar adverse event (eg house fire)

Evidence of the client's situation

Although it may not be possible for the client to get proof of their situation, they should make a reasonable effort to do so.
