Medical assessments
In some circumstances, you may want to consider if an Emergency Benefit should include providing medical evidence of continued restriction in their capacity for work and the degree of that restriction. Where the equivalent benefit is subject to continued medical assessments, generally you will include medical certificate conditions as part of your conditions of grant. These conditions can be similar to the medical assessments of Supported Living Payment - health condition, injury or disability, or Jobseeker Support - health condition, injury or disability.
Note you cannot apply the same requirements as Supported Living Payment - health condition, injury or disability, or Jobseeker Support - health condition, injury or disability. You can grant the Emergency Benefit and require the client to meet certain conditions that look similar to the medical certificate requirements. Where a person fails to meet this condition of grant, the Emergency Benefit may be stopped.
The conditions of grant may be:
- limited in their capacity or unable to work for a period of time because of a health condition
- because of a health condition, cannot work for an indefinite period of time or
- in employment but their earnings are reduced because of a health condition, an injury or a disability
and
- a medical certificate is required as proof of their limited capacity for work
From time-to-time, a client's circumstances may change and the conditions of grant of Emergency Benefit may need to be reviewed.
Note where a client has advised a change of circumstances review their eligibility and if necessary the conditions of grant.
