Examples of calculating absence from New Zealand

Example 1

A client applies for benefit to be paid for 10 days when they are going to be absent from New Zealand. In the past 52 weeks the client has had 10 days absence from New Zealand and continued to be paid their benefit.

Step

Calculation

Identify the day after the client is intending to leave New Zealand.

14 September 2019

Count back 52 weeks from this date.

15 September 2018

Count the number of days the client has continued getting their benefit while they were overseas in this 52 week period.

Days client has continued getting their benefit while absent from New Zealand between 14 September 2018 and 15 September 2019 = 10 days

Subtract the number of days the client was paid their benefit while absent from New Zealand from 28 days.

28 - 10 days = 18 days available

If the client meets the criteria to be paid their benefit while overseas, pay the client for the days they have available.

If the client meets the criteria to be paid their benefit while overseas, pay them for the 10 days they are out of the country.

Example 2

A client applies for benefit to be paid for 10 days when they are going to be absent from New Zealand. In the past 52 weeks the client has had 20 days absence from New Zealand and continued being paid their benefit.

Step

Calculation

Identify the day after the client is intending to leave New Zealand.

14 September 2019

Count back 52 weeks from this date.

15 September 2018

Count the number of days the client has continued to get their benefit while they were overseas in this 52 week period.

Days client has continued getting their benefit while absent from New Zealand between 14 September 2018 and 15 September 2019 = 20 days

Subtract the number of days the client has been paid their benefit while absent from New Zealand from 28 days.

28 - 20 days = 8 days available

If the client meets the criteria to be paid their benefit while overseas, pay the client for the days they have available.

If the client meets the criteria to be paid their benefit while overseas, pay them for the 8 days they are out of the country. For 2 of the days they are absent from New Zealand they will not receive their payments.

Check if the client meets the criteria to get their benefit for more than 28 days in a 52 week period - if they meet these criteria, they may be able to continue getting their payment for the additional 2 days of absence.
