Approved training

For training to be approved, first you need to decide if training is the appropriate activity for the client and then consider whether the course is the right course.

Is training the appropriate activity

Consider whether a training course is the most suitable activity for a client.

Consider with the client whether other activities (for example programmes, seminars, or work experience) might be more suitable for moving the client towards full-time employment.

Discuss and take into account the client's career or job preferences, and consider:

  • their educational qualifications
  • their employment history
  • their skills and
  • whether training will help them find work at the earliest opportunity

Is this the right course?

The course must:

  • focus on teaching practical, employment-related skills
  • support the client to find work and
  • be less than 12 weeks (other than approved Government sponsored courses)

Some additional things to note are:

  • clients applying for courses longer than 12 weeks should be seeking assistance through StudyLink if the course has been approved by the Ministry of Education for Student Loans and/or Student Allowances and
  • if a client is undergoing pre-employment training under Flexi-Wage they cannot receive the Jobseeker Support as they should be getting a wage from the employer

Approval of local courses

A manager client service delivery can approve a local course (for the purpose of paying Jobseeker Support when it meets the above criteria.
