Gets a Student Allowance
When a child gets a Student Allowance or an Independent Circumstances Allowance under the Student Allowances Regulations 1998 they are no longer a dependent child.
Date of review
The child should be excluded from the start of the pay period following the date Student Allowance (or Independent Circumstances Allowance) commences.
Note there are specific rules for deciding whether a child is considered a dependent child when they turn 18 and are continuing in education.
Family tax credit
Family tax credits should stop from the start of the pay period following the date Student Allowance was granted, to avoid an overpayment with Inland Revenue for the client.
