Earning the right to receive payment directly
Young partners who are subject to youth money management can earn the right to have their portion of main benefit, family tax credit, Best Start tax credit and any extra help paid directly to them.
The young partner can gain control of their payment if:
- they have demonstrated continued compliance with their obligations and
- their service provider or Ministry of Social Development 'in-house' service considers that they are financially competent
A young partner who has earned control over their payment has the choice to have their benefit paid directly to them and they will be responsible for paying their costs.
Note when young partners are sanctioned and they are not subject to youth money management because they have earned the right to manage their own money, they won't be put back on youth money management like those clients on Youth Payment and Young Parent Payment. This ensures the sanctions for clients who aren't subject to youth money management remain graduated through any obligation failures.
