Method of payment

There are 2 ways that young partners aged 16 or 17 years with no children and 16 to 19 years with dependent children can have their portion of their benefit paid to them depending on whether the young partner is subject to youth money management or not.

Young person is not subject to youth money management

Where a young person is not subject to youth money management they can get their Jobseeker Support, family tax credit, Best Start tax credit and any extra help directly to their bank account.

Young person is subject to youth money management

Where a young person is subject to youth money management the Jobseeker Support, family tax credit and any extra help (except Disability Allowance and Child Disability Allowance) is paid via:

  • payment directly to supplier (eg a payees redirection for accommodation costs, utility costs and lawful debts)
  • in-hand allowance which is paid directly to the young person's bank account
  • payment card - the young person is able to purchase goods (such as food and groceries) from approved suppliers

Note Disability Allowance and Child Disability Allowance is paid directly to the young person's bank account.

Review of decision

A young person cannot review the decision on how the Jobseeker Support is paid to them.
