Tax codes

New Zealand Superannuation clients must choose a tax code appropriate to their circumstances. The client can change their tax code at any time.

All queries about correct tax codes must be referred to Inland Revenue.

As a general guideline:

  • if New Zealand Superannuation is the client's highest or only source of income, the 'M' tax code should be used
  • if New Zealand Superannuation is not the client's highest or only source of income, a secondary or 'S' tax code should be used or
  • clients with a Student Loan must use a tax code with the Student Loan (SL) repayment code or
  • a tailored tax code can also be used when the client has other income

Tailored tax codes

Clients need to apply to Inland Revenue for a tailored tax code. The client needs to provide proof of their tailored tax code for example, a letter from Inland Revenue, for this to be added to their New Zealand Superannuation record.

A tailored tax code should only be added to a client's New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension at grant if verification from Inland Revenue of the tailored tax code is provided by the client.

The tailored tax code only applies for the year in which it is issued. Each year all clients with a tailored tax code need to re-apply to Inland Revenue to get a tailored tax code.

Instructions are provided each year in March on the 'end of tax year' process required for clients with a tailored tax code.

New Zealand Superannuation and Veterans Pension clients are the most likely to use a tailored tax code.

Inland Revenue will contact people who may be better off using a tailored tax code.

'Tailored tax codes' replaced 'special tax code' on 1 April 2019.
