Approved training
For training to be approved, first you need to decide if training is the appropriate activity for the partner and then consider whether the course is the right course.
Is training the appropriate activity
Consider whether a training course is the most suitable activity for the partner. Consider with the partner whether other activities (for example programmes, seminars, or work experience) might be more suitable for moving the partner towards full-time employment.
Discuss and take into account the partner's career or job preferences, consider:
- their educational qualifications
- their employment history
- their skills and
- whether training will help them find work at the earliest opportunity
Is this the right course?
The course must:
- focus on teaching practical, employment-related skills
- support the partner to find work and
- be less than 12 weeks (other than approved Government sponsored courses)
Some additional things to note are:
- partners applying for courses longer than 12 weeks should be seeking assistance through StudyLink if the course has been approved by the Ministry of Education for Student Loans or Student Allowances and
- if a partner is undergoing pre-employment training under Flexi-Wage [no link find out why] they cannot receive their portion of the benefit as they should be receiving a wage from the employer
