Example - Supported Living Payment

The example below shows how to assess the rate of benefit to pay after MSD has worked out how much income to exempt. Note this example is not about deciding how much income to exempt.

A single client is getting Supported Living Payment and is earning $250.00 gross per week.

MSD has determined the client is severely disabled and decides to exempt the amount of $30.00.

The assessment is:

Gross weekly earnings

$250.00

Less personal earnings exemption

$20.00

Less exemption for severe disablement

$30.00

Chargeable income

$200.00

Less income allowed before benefit affected

$160.00

Equals income

$40.00

Amount benefit reduced on account of income

($40.00 x 0.30 cents = $12.00)

$12.00

Supported Living Payment net rate for single adult 18+ years (as at 1 April 2026)

$424.60

Less reduction due to income

$12.00
