Kaumatua flats

Many marae include self-contained kaumatua flats. These flats are usually owned by the Runanga Iwi (Council of people) and are rented to kaumatua (elders).

Kaumatua living alone in one of these flats may receive the single living alone rate if the flat is a house or flat.

Note self-contained kaumatua flats will usually meet the definition of flat for the single living alone rate to be paid.

If the kaumatua flats do not meet the definition of a flat, you need to consider whether they meet the definition of a boarding house.
