When grandparenting ends

Couples getting the Veteran's Pension grandparented non-qualified partner rate on or after 9 November 2020 will no longer qualify for the grandparented rate in any of the following situations:

• the non-qualified partner starts getting New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension in their own right
• the qualified partner chooses not to continue getting the grandparented non-qualified partner rate
• the qualified partner, with or without the non-qualified partner, is absent from New Zealand and no longer qualifies for Veteran's Pension on or after 9 November 2020
• the qualified partner is in custody, in prison or on remand on or after 9 November 2020 and does not qualify for ongoing payments of Veteran’s Pension for the period of imprisonment

Once the grandparented non-qualified partner rate ends, the qualifying partner cannot include a non-qualified partner again.

Note a client getting the Veteran's Pension grandparented non-qualified partner rate can transfer to New Zealand Superannuation if they qualify and include their grandparented non-qualified partner in their New Zealand Superannuation payments.
