Allocating bedrooms for known future household members

Additional bedrooms can sometimes be approved for household members who are not part of the household at the time of application but it is known they will become part of the household soon. This may be when a signatory, applicable person or additional occupant is:

  • pregnant (it is reasonable to expect a newborn child to have their own room)
  • having children returning to their care
  • reuniting with the household - whether household members have come from overseas or within New Zealand
  • requiring a carer for overnight stays

You need to consider whether it is reasonable to include them as a member of the household for bedroom allocation, having regard to the:

  • likely date that they will join the household
  • length of time that the client is likely to be on the social housing register

The tenant must provide verification the future event will occur before a bedroom can be allocated.

Example:

  • client has been assessed as requiring a carer, and the carer is not available for 1 month - include the extra bedroom
  • joining household is at the Mangere Refugee Centre - include the family. But if the household is still out of the country working through residency requirements do not include extra bedroom/s
  • child is returning to their care as soon as they have a bedroom for them - include the child for bedroom purposes

Relocation required for children returning from Oranga Tamariki care

A client may need to relocate due to not having enough bedrooms for their children who are returning from Oranga Tamariki care.

When the allocation of bedroom space is the only thing preventing the return of the children from Oranga Tamariki care, a bedroom may be allocated.

Oranga Tamariki-Ministry for Children is known as "Oranga Tamariki". It came into existence on 1 April 2017, and replaced what was known as "Child, Youth and Family" or CYF.

Its original name, from 1 April 2017 until 18 January 2018, was the "Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki".
