Difficulty in social functioning, lack of social skills or history of transience

Difficulties in social functioning and a lack of social skills can affect the client's ability to sustain alternative housing.

The client may not be able to find a suitable property due to difficulties in social functioning, lack of social skills or a history of transience caused by:

  • a lack of necessary confidence and skills
  • a lack of knowledge, for example, does not know who to approach to discuss other housing options
  • has only ever had a social housing provider as a landlord
  • lacks confidence in private sector or distrusts private landlords
  • has a history of transience resulting in reluctance of private sector to rent to them

History of transience

Only moves where the client was required to move or had an acceptable reason for moving can be taken into account for the assessment of sustainability.

Social housing providers are housing providers, which include Housing New Zealand and community housing providers.

Community housing providers are approved, registered and regulated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

A social housing provider can provide properties for tenants who are eligible for social housing and for subsided rent through Income Related Rent.
