Examples of fast track for a specified child or young person in the custody of Oranga Tamariki or in approved permanent care
Example 1 - eligible
Oranga Tamariki has placed a child in the care of the child's grandparents as there were serious concerns about the safety of the child due to family violence.
It is considered a permanent placement (over 12 months) and is in the best interests of the child. The child's grandparents are on the housing register and are now eligible for fast-track.
Example 2 - eligible
Matthew was placed in the care of his aunty 2 years ago by Oranga Tamariki due to his mother's addiction issues. His mother has recently been proactively engaging with their social worker from Oranga Tamariki and is now in a position to have him return to her care.
Matthew will stay with his mother 5 days a week and the plan is for him to leave the custody of Oranga Tamariki and return to his mother's care full-time in 18 months. Matthew's mother applies for public housing and is eligible for the fast-track provision as Matthew will be placed with his parent.
Example 3 - not eligible
Oranga Tamariki called a Family Group Conference due to concerns about the safety of a baby. The young mother, wider whānau and Oranga Tamariki agreed that the best solution would be for the grandparents of the baby to take care of them for a few months.
This is a temporary placement, and the intention is not long term. As it is unlikely the child will be in the care of their relative for more than 12 months, the household does not qualify for fast track.
