Effect of withdrawal or reduction of course
Withdrawal or reduction to part-time study
If a student withdraws from study or reduces to part-time study, they may lose their future Student Allowance entitlement for failing to pass more than half of their study.
If a student indicates that they are intending to withdraw or reduce their study to part-time, you must advise them of the possible consequences.
Full year study reduced to 1 semester
If a student enrols in a full year course with semester 1 and 2 papers but then decides to withdraw before receiving any semester 2 payments (including any continuation period payments), they will become a 'semester' student.
As a 'semester' student they will need to pass more than half of their semester 1 study to retain their future entitlement to a Student Allowance.
Full-time study reduced to part-time
Where a student or the tertiary provider is considering reducing the student's study from full-time to part-time, the student may no longer be eligible to continue to receive Student Allowance for that study. The student may seek approval for a Student Allowance under Limited full-time study.
Limited full-time study is assessed on the student's personal circumstances. The tertiary provider may need to seek approval from the Tertiary Education Commission for any planned change to the course or programme. The course or programme may no longer be approved for Student Allowances due to the planned change.
