Reinstatement of entitlement

Reinstatement

When a student has failed to pass more than half the work of a full-time tertiary course, their entitlement may be reinstated if they meet the reinstatement criteria.

Criteria

A student whose Student Allowance is suspended for failing to pass more than half the work of the last tertiary course they received an allowance for, may have their entitlement reinstated if, since the suspension, they pass more than half the work of a Student Allowance approved full-time course, at their own expense (for example, using a Student Loan).

Part-year or full-year study

It does not matter whether the student is enrolled in a part-year or full-year course, as long as they pass more than half of the work of a Student Allowance approved full-time course, their entitlement can be reinstated.

For example a student:

  • enrolled part-time over a full year, (not eligible for Limited full-time) needs to pass at least 0.4001 EFTS or
  • enrolled part-time on a 12 week course needs to pass at least 0.15001 EFTS

For more information about EFTS see:

Semester-based study

A student who passes more than half the work of a Student Allowance approved full-time course in the first semester, whether or not they are enrolled on a semester or full year basis, can use that study to reinstate their entitlement to a Student Allowance for the second semester.

A standard full-time course in semester one is generally 15 weeks long. To reinstate their entitlement to a Student Allowance, they must pass at least 0.15001 EFTS of a 15 week first semester full-time course.

Study that is not semester-based

A student who passes more than half the work of a Student Allowance approved full-time course in the first part of their study that is not semester based, can use that study to reinstate their entitlement to a Student Allowance for the later part of that study.

The reinstatement calculation will depend on the length and EFTS value of their study, including any of its component parts, and determining at what point they passed more than half of a full-time course.

For more information about EFTS see:

Study overseas

When a student has undertaken tertiary level study at an overseas tertiary provider, that study can be used for reinstatement purposes when the study is a recognised programme, or the New Zealand tertiary provider recognises that study as part of the student's recognised programme.

Course now 'recognised' since suspension

A student may have passed more than half of a full-time course which was not recognised at the time as an approved course but has since been recognised for Student Allowance purposes. This situation needs to be considered on its merits. Seek advice if you are unsure.

Secondary school study

A Student Allowance for tertiary study that has been suspended cannot be reinstated by the completion of any secondary school study.

Limited full-time study

The reinstatement requirements also apply to Limited full-time students.

Example

A student is approved to study 0.2 EFTS Limited full-time. This student would need to pass more than half of the 0.2 EFTS (i.e. more than 0.1 EFTS) to have their Student Allowance entitlement reinstated.
