Study and residency criteria

To be awarded a NZQA Scholarship Monetary Award a student must be:

  • enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary education provider in a course recognised for Student Loan and/or Student Allowance purposes in New Zealand and
  • enrolled in more than 0.4 EFTS

The requirement to be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident was removed from 2009. The change applies to students sitting the examinations from the end of 2009 and means that international students can now qualify for these awards, provided they meet the general eligibility criteria.

For more information see:

For information about New Zealand Scholarship Examinations and the value of the awards visit the NZQA website.

Equivalent Full-time Student.

The EFTS value is a measure of the amount of study or workload involved in undertaking a course.

The Tertiary Education Commission confirms the EFTS value of each course as part of approving access to government funding.
