Commencement date

The commencement date of payment overseas is:

• the first New Zealand Superannuation or Veterans Pension payday after departure, for clients applying before they leave New Zealand or
• the first New Zealand Superannuation or Veterans Pension payday after Work and Income receive the application, for those who apply after leaving New Zealand

Note a person who has left New Zealand to go overseas for less than 26 weeks, who cannot return to New Zealand within 30 weeks, may, under certain circumstances apply for portable payments from overseas. However, they must meet certain criteria - most importantly, they must be unable to return because of circumstances that are:

• beyond their control and
• unforeseen at the time of their departure from New Zealand
