Commencement of payment in Canada
Client applies for payment in Canada before they leave New Zealand
When a client applies for their New Zealand benefit or pension to be paid in Canada before their departure from New Zealand, payments to Canada will start on the first payday after their departure from New Zealand.
Client applies for New Zealand portable payment into Canada from Canada
When a client applies from Canada, the commencement date will depend on whether the client is already getting a New Zealand benefit or pension, and whether they arrived in Canada direct from New Zealand or after residing in another country.
Client is already getting a New Zealand benefit or pension payment
If the client is already getting a New Zealand benefit or pension and they apply for payment into Canada, the payments into Canada will start from:
- the first payday after their departure from New Zealand (if they arrive in Canada within 26 weeks of leaving New Zealand) or
- the date they applied for the New Zealand benefit or pension to be paid into Canada or
- the date they applied for an equivalent Canadian benefit or pension or
- the date they arrived in Canada (if they did not arrive within 26 weeks of leaving New Zealand) or
- the date the agreement with Canada came into force (1 May 1997)
whichever is the later.
Client is not getting a New Zealand benefit or pension
If the client is not getting a New Zealand benefit or pension, the payment into Canada will start on:
- the date the client applied for a New Zealand benefit or pension to be paid into Canada or
- the date the client applied for an equivalent Canadian benefit or pension
Unless this date is before:
- the date of entitlement (eg when client turns 65 for New Zealand Superannuation /Veterans Pension) or
- the date the Agreement came into force (1 May 1997)
in these cases, we would use the later date.
The Canadian authorities forward the application form and supporting documentation to International Services
