Maltese pensions in New Zealand
When a former resident of Malta applies for a New Zealand benefit or pension it is important to know whether they are receiving a Maltese pension, or if they may be entitled to one.
A client who has previously resided in Malta must complete details of their residence in Malta and any other country of residence on the application form when they apply for any New Zealand benefit or pension.
The overseas residence details must be entered in CMS. These details are used by International Services to determine whether the client may be entitled to a Maltese benefit or pension or pension from any other country.
If the client is already receiving an overseas pension you should find out the details to establish whether this pension should be a direct deduction from the New Zealand benefit or pension.
Maltese old age pensions
The following Maltese old age pensions are covered by the agreement with Malta and may be payable to or are being paid to former Maltese residents living in New Zealand:
- Retirement Pension
- Non-contributory Old Age Pension (means tested)
Other benefits and pensions
Some Maltese benefits not covered by the agreement with Malta may still be payable in New Zealand. These payments may be deductible under the Social Security Act 2018.
Totalisation of periods of contributions in Malta cannot be used to meet residence qualifications for a New Zealand benefit such as Jobseeker Support.
Note the agreement with Malta only allows for the exchange on information in relation to retirement and old age pensions. Information on other Maltese benefits and pensions cannot be exchanged between New Zealand and Malta. Any information will need to be provided by the client.
