Approved parenting programme
An approved parenting programme is generally a programme that:
- a young person has been referred to by a service provider or Work and Income "in-house" service or
- is provided by the service provider themselves or
- follows the guidelines for parenting programmes
Recognition of prior learning
Prior learning can be recognised for clients who have previously completed parenting programmes.
The client can be assessed as having met the requirement to participate in an approved parenting programme if they have completed a parenting course.
When a young person has prior learning, the provider must assess the past parenting course using Youth Service parenting programme guidelines. The provider will determine if the client is required to complete a full course or refresher training.
Refresher training
The refresher training should focus on any components not covered by a parenting programme previously completed by the client.
The content of the refresher course covered must be in line with the Youth Service guidelines. However the course can be completed in a shorter timeframe (for example: half a day) and in a less intensive manner.
