Qualifies for another benefit
A young person may qualify for another benefit due to a change in their circumstances. It is also important to determine if the young person still qualifies for Young Parent Payment.
For example, if a young person turns 20 they would no longer qualify for Young Parent Payment and would generally transfer to Sole Parent Support.
Note when a young person turns 20 years old the Young Parent Payment should stop. However in some circumstances the benefit may continue. See: Change in age
If the young person qualifies for more than one benefit they must be told which benefit is the most beneficial for their particular circumstances. They will need to be advised of:
- benefit rates
- the effect of any income they may receive (income reduction and any exemptions) and
- benefit obligations
The young person must make the final decision on which benefit they receive after being given all relevant information.
