Recent bereavement of their partner
A young person whose partner has recently died, can be exempt from meeting all their activity obligations to allow them time to adjust to their new circumstances. This is a full exemption.
Before granting this exemption you should consider the following factors:
- changes in living circumstances
- changes in childcare responsibilities
- particular religious or cultural beliefs or practices
Proof
The young person needs to provide:
- a personal statement
- evidence included in their application for benefit
- a death notice from the newspaper or
- a death certificate
Duration
This exemption is initially given for up to 3 months from the date of death.
You can extend the exemption. Before you do this you should ask the young person to provide information to support the exemption continuing.
SWIFTT process
Use SWIFTT exemption reason 'Recent bereavement of partner/spouse'.
Getting an incentive payment
If the young person is getting an incentive payment, and then qualifies for an exemption you will need to decide if they can continue to get the payment.
