Recent separation from their partner
A young person who has recently separated from their partner, can be exempt from meeting all their activity obligations to allow them time to adjust to their new circumstances. This is a full exemption.
Before granting this exemption you should consider the following factors:
- changes in living circumstances
- changes in childcare responsibilities
Proof
The young person needs to provide:
- a personal statement or
- evidence included in their application for benefit
Duration
The duration of an exemption is based on the reassessment date recorded on the medical certificate by the young person’s health practitioner.
You can extend the exemption. Before you do this you should ask the young person to provide information to support the exemption continuing.
Getting an incentive payment
If the young person is getting an incentive payment and then qualifies for an exemption you will need to decide if they can continue to get the payment.
