Tertiary education

A young person receiving Young Parent Payment can meet their activity obligation by studying full-time at a university or polytechnic.

Generally they should be working towards a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or higher qualification.

A young person enrolled in full-time tertiary education must:

  • be enrolled in a course considered to be 'full-time'
  • regularly attend classes
  • complete assignments and
  • complete other course requirements

Note a young person does not have to move to Independent Circumstances Allowance if they qualify for this payment.

Tertiary holidays

Young people intending to return to tertiary education in the next academic year can be paid Young Parent Payment during the summer holidays. Any incentive payments earned will continue over this period also.

Note you may also require a young person to undertake other activities that work towards NCEA level 2 or an equivalent or higher qualifications during the summer holidays.

Incentive payments

Young people receiving Young Parent Payment can earn incentive payments for education and budgeting obligations if they meet certain criteria.
