In or available for tertiary education
A young person can receive Youth Payment if they are enrolled in or available for a full-time course of tertiary education, and meet the other qualifications. Tertiary education includes study at universities and polytechnics.
Generally the course of study will lead to a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or other higher qualification.
While in tertiary education and receiving Youth Payment, the young person has activity obligations, including regularly attending lectures and completing assignments.
In SWIFTT the Youth Payment activity should be recorded as 'Approved Training'. An expiry date should be added for the earlier of the end of the academic year or the last exam (if the course finishes half-way through the year). At this time you should reassess the Youth Payment, for example, check with the young person if they intend to continue studying.
School holidays
Young people intending to return to tertiary education in the next academic year can be paid Youth Payment during the summer holidays. Any incentive payments earned will continue to be paid over this period.
Note a service provider or Work and Income "in-house" service may require a young person to undertake other activities that work towards NCEA level 2 or equivalent or higher qualifications during the summer break.
