Would qualify for Jobseeker Support - health condition, injury or disability
If a young person meets the qualifications for Jobseeker Support on the ground of a health condition, injury or disability (but for their age) they can be exempt from meeting some or all of their activity obligations until their capacity for education, training and work-based learning improves.
This can be a full or partial exemption.
The young person must be limited in their capacity to undertake activities because of a health condition, injury or disability.
For more information see:
Full or partial exemption
If the young person is partially exempt they are able to:
- plan for education, training or work-based learning and
- undertake other activities such as budgeting
If a young person qualifies for a full exemption this means they are unable to meet any of their activity obligations, including planning.
Proof
To support their exemption, the young person is required to provide a medical certificate. The information required on the medical certificate is:
- a diagnosis (what the illness is)
- the impact of the condition on their ability to undertake activity obligations
- the likely duration of the impact
- their capacity for education, training and work-based learning and
- any other information that is required
Duration
The duration of an exemption is based on the reassessment date recorded on the medical certificate by the young person’s health practitioner.
This exemption should then be reviewed. At the review you should discuss the young person's circumstances and consider whether it is appropriate to extend the exemption for a further period. You can ask the young person to provide proof that their exemption should be extended.
Getting an incentive payment
If the young person is getting an incentive payment and then qualifies for an exemption, you will need to decide if they can continue to get the payment.
