Formula assessment of Child Support

A formula assessment of Child Support is when Inland Revenue calculates the amount of Child Support the liable parent must pay and arranges payments to the receiving carer.

All carers can apply to Inland Revenue for a formula assessment of Child Support, regardless of the type of benefit they are getting.

For carers getting an Unsupported Child's Benefit, applying for a formula assessment is generally required.

When Unsupported Child's Benefit carers need to apply for a formula assessment of Child Support, the amount paid by the liable parent is used to help pay for that benefit.

When the Child Support paid is more than the Unsupported Child's Benefit rate, any excess is paid to the carer.
