Liable parent is deceased
To establish a family breakdown, which is required to qualify for Unsupported Child's Benefit, at least one parent must be legally identified.
Carers who have provided proof that one liable parent of the child is deceased only need to apply for Child Support from the remaining liable parent.
Proof can be any of the following:
- a copy of the liable parent's death certificate
- a copy of the liable parent's death notice
- a written declaration completed by the carer that affirms the liable parent is deceased and including the date of death
However, if another specified reason applies to the remaining liable parent e.g. there would be a risk of violence if the carer applied for Child Support from that parent, the carer is not required to apply for a formula assessment from Inland Revenue
For more information see:
Legislation
- UCB beneficiary is not required to apply for formula assessment section 9(5)(c) Child Support Act 1991
