Determining if a longer grant is appropriate in the client's circumstances
Even if the qualifications for a longer grant are met, MSD still needs to determine whether a longer grant is appropriate in the client's circumstances.
Examples of when MSD may determine a longer grant is appropriate in the client's circumstances include where:
- it is unreasonable for the client to reapply every 7 nights. For example:
- the client or client's dependant has significant health or mobility issues
- the client has a newborn and it's before their first immunisation
- family violence issues
- the client has signed a tenancy agreement for a new property, but their occupancy does not start until a future date and they do not have accommodation in the meantime
- the client has accepted a place with a social housing provider (Kāinga Ora or registered community housing provider) but their occupancy does not start until a future date and they do not have accommodation in the meantime
