When the emergency housing responsibilities apply

The client must agree to, and meet the emergency housing responsibilities while staying in emergency housing.

Clients are required to meet the responsibilities from their 8th night in emergency housing for the duration of their emergency housing event.

The client who applies for the Emergency Housing Grant is responsible for meeting the emergency housing responsibilities.

Note the emergency housing responsibilities, agreed activities, and warnings only apply to the client, not the partner.

No responsibilities apply for the first 7 nights

A client is not required to meet the emergency housing responsibilities during their first 7 nights in emergency housing.

However, when the client is applying for an Emergency Housing Grant and it is their first 7 nights, MSD must:

  • explain the emergency housing responsibilities to the client in a way they understand
  • advise the client of what they will need to do from their 8th night, and the consequences of not meeting their responsibilities

If it is appropriate in the clients situation, MSD can still discuss what opportunities, information, or services might help them find other housing options during the first 7 nights.

The client will not receive a warning if they do not to complete an activity during their first 7 nights in emergency housing. This is because their first 7 nights can be considered a settling-in period while they adjust.

First grant is more than 7 nights

Generally, when a client has a new emergency housing event, their first grant will be paid for up to 7 nights. However, MSD can pay for up to 14 nights when there is low availability of emergency housing in the region.

If a client is granted an emergency housing grant for up to 14 nights, the emergency housing responsibilities will still only apply from night 8.

MSD must set agreed activities with the client before their 8th night in emergency housing. The client is only required to complete the activities on or after night 8 of their emergency housing grant.
