Multiple applications for the same need
Some people may need help with the same need more than once during an event, e.g., when there is an ongoing weather event causing multiple impacts over the affected period.
In these situations, one or more additional Civil Defence Payments can be considered for the same need.
Before making Civil Defence Payments in this situation, you must be satisfied:
- there is a genuine additional immediate need e.g. the original item purchased was damaged or is no longer available as a direct result of the emergency or adverse event and
- the person has explored all other options to meet their need but has been unable to
Example
During the Auckland Floods Event, Maraea’s home became inaccessible due to flooding, and she was moved to emergency accommodation.
Because her home was inaccessible, she couldn’t take any bedding or clothing with her. MSD assisted with a Civil Defence Payment for food, clothing, and bedding.
Over the next few days significant rain continued to fall, and on Monday Maraea’s emergency accommodation was flooded.
Maraea was moved to the local welfare centre but was unable to take any of her bedding as it was saturated with contaminated flood water.
The welfare centre didn’t provide bedding and Maraea couldn’t source any elsewhere. MSD assisted with another Civil Defence Payment to enable Maraea to purchase replacement bedding.
