Youth money management
Youth money management is where a young partner gets an in-hand allowance of up to $50 a week, with most of their benefit payment being redirected to pay for their everyday living costs and any lawful debts. Any remainder is placed onto their payment card.
A young partner who is required to be youth money managed cannot review the decision on how their benefit payment (or their portion of the benefit payment) is paid to them.
No longer subject to youth money management
A young partner aged 16 or 17 years (with no children) or 16 to 19 years (with dependent children) will not be subject to youth money management and will have their full payment paid directly to them when they have:
- demonstrated continued compliance with their obligations and been assessed as being financially competent or
- opted out of youth money management because they turned 18 years (for young partners without dependent children) or 20 years (for young partners with dependent children) and have chosen to stay in the Youth Service and complete their course of study, training or work-based learning
