Discharged from Oranga Tamariki care

Where Oranga Tamariki or other authorised agency has care, custody or sole guardianship of the child, and returns the child to the care of the immediate previous caregiver, they do not make payments for the child.

The child is then a dependent child and can be included in the Emergency Maintenance Allowance.

Where the relationship is not one of care, but more of a boarding arrangement, the young person may be able to receive Youth Payment or Young Parent Payment.

Once a child has been discharged from care the child can be considered a dependent child even when Oranga Tamariki or any other authorised agency involvement continues, for example:

  • Additional Guardianship Order
  • Support Order or
  • Services Order

When there is a Service or Support Order in place, you will need to make sure that the Court's intent allows you to consider the child as a dependent child.

Its original name, from 1 April 2017 until 18 January 2018, was the "Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki".
