Approved training (young partners)
In a situation where a young partner cannot return to secondary education, the next appropriate activity to consider is approved training.
Generally they will be working towards a NCEA level 2 qualification or an equivalent or higher qualification.
For youth activity obligations purposes approved training is defined as employment-related training.
Approved employment-related training must:
- be reputable and likely to teach the young partner skills that will help them find work
- have an emphasis on training rather than study
- offer full-time training (at least 30 hours per week) and
- offer NCEA or New Zealand Qualification Framework (NZQF) credits
When advising a young partner of approved training you need to consider their future goals and aspirations. You should try and match types of training that would be suitable for the young partner and their career path.
A young partner in full-time approved training must:
- regularly attend the programme
- complete assignments and
- complete other course requirements
Employment-related training
Employment-related training includes (but is not limited to):
- Regional training courses
- Workplace/industry training
- Youth Guarantee courses
