Caring full-time for person with health condition, injury or disability

This exemption may apply to clients or partners with work preparation obligations, or partners with work obligations.

A client or partner may be caring for a person who has a health condition, injury or a disability and who needs to be cared for on a full-time basis.

This can be a full exemption.

Note MSD should consider whether the client or partner should transfer to Supported Living Payment on the ground of caring for a person.

Evidence

The client or partner must provide evidence from a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner:

  • that the person needs the client's full-time care and
  • that without that care the person would need hospital level care or care of an equivalent kind and
  • the length of time the person will need that care

Duration

This exemption can be granted for up to 12 months.

This exemption should then be reviewed. At the review MSD should consider the client's circumstances and whether it is appropriate to extend the exemption. MSD can ask the client to provide evidence that the exemption should be extended.
