Developmental activities

To provide additional support to the young person, developmental activities may also be included alongside other activities that a young person is undertaking. A young person can undertake other developmental activities and still be considered to be meeting their youth activity obligations as long as:

  • they are continuing to participate, or are available to undertake, full-time education, training or work-based learning
  • you have assessed that the person needs to address other needs while they undertake full-time education, training or work-based learning and
  • the young person agrees to participate

Note a young person can be asked to participate in developmental activities but they cannot be required to. The young person cannot be sanctioned for not agreeing to undertake a developmental activity.

Other developmental activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Interpersonal skills - increasing a young person's people or communication skills
  • Self-motivation (for example confidence or motivation courses)
  • Writing and language - young people who have learned English as their second language may require extra tuition to complement their main education or training activity
  • Counselling/family violence related programmes
  • Drug and alcohol counselling
  • Social rehabilitation programmes

Note the Limited Services Volunteers programme will generally not be appropriate for partners of main beneficiaries unless they are transitioning out of the service and have job seeking as their destination.
