Outcome of designated health practitioner assessment

Where the designated health practitioner assessment:

  • confirms eligibility to Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability) MSD should grant or review the client's benefit accordingly
  • indicates that the client has or does not have the capacity to work part-time MSD can use this information to make a decision about whether the client should be subject to work obligations

Permanent and severe

In some cases, the designated health practitioner may provide information that supports eligibility to Supported Living Payment rather than Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability).

In this situation, their application for Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability) can be treated as an application for Supported Living Payment.

No eligibility to Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability)

When the report from the designated health practitioner indicates the client does not qualify for Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability), MSD should consider their eligibility to Jobseeker Support with full-time work obligations.

If MSD declines their application, the client must be advised of the outcome including their right to review the decision. Medical decisions are reviewed by the Medical Appeals Board.

Cancel Jobseeker Support

If the designated health practitioner indicates the client does not qualify for Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability) the client’s eligibility will continue for 28 days beyond the date of the designated health practitioner appointment.

During this period MSD should advise the client they are no longer eligible for Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability), inform them of their right to have this decision reviewed by the Medical Appeals Board and invite them to apply for an alternative benefit.

Any alternative benefit can be granted after the 28 day extension to Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability) has expired.

Part-time capacity to work

If a designated health practitioner indicates the client has or does not have capacity to work part-time this may influence whether the client should be subject to work obligations.

Note this will not have any effect on whether the client is eligible for Jobseeker Support (health condition, injury or disability).
