Client dies before New Zealand Superannuation granted or reviewed
Surviving partner or dependent child
When a client dies (and there is a surviving partner or dependent child) before a decision is made on an application or review for New Zealand Superannuation you can continue the application or review process as if the client had not died.
Single client
When there is no surviving partner or dependent children the benefit application should generally be declined.
However, if there is a request for the application to be decided or the circumstances of the situation merit it, consult your manager client service delivery for a decision.
Funeral Grant
In situations when the decision to grant or review New Zealand Superannuation is made after the date of death of the client, you decide any Funeral Grant as if the deceased client were in receipt of New Zealand Superannuation.
Legislation
- After death of applicant section 303 Social Security Act 2018
- Review of entitlement to, or rate of, benefit granted sections 304-310 Social Security Act 2018
