SWIFTT process to pay a partner

When you decide to continue payment of New Zealand Superannuation to the partner of a client who has been imprisoned, you will need to determine the most appropriate SWIFTT process to enable payment to be made to the partner.

The process for payment will depend on the following:

  • the period in prison is in the past
  • the client is due to be released from prison shortly
  • the client is likely to be in prison for more than four weeks and
  • the rate of payment for the partner

Note there is discretion to pay the full married, civil union or de facto rate of benefit.

Period in prison has passed or release is imminent

Generally you should use the SBDR screen in SWIFTT to:

  • suspend the client's portion of New Zealand Superannuation for the period in prison and
  • pay the appropriate rate of New Zealand Superannuation to the partner

Period in prison exceeds 4 weeks

When the New Zealand Superannuation is to continue, and be paid to the partner you will need to contact Helpline for advice regarding the SWIFTT process to use.
