Client applies for assistance from StudyLink
If a client receiving Sole Parent Support advises that they intend to study, and a decision is made that they cannot meet their obligations on Sole Parent Support while they do so. You should explain to the client that they may be sanctioned if they fail one of their obligations as a result of their study commitments.
They can also consider applying for financial assistance support from StudyLink.
If the client is applying for financial support from StudyLink, they can receive Sole Parent Support until they start receiving assistance from StudyLink.
Applying for Student Allowance, Independent Circumstances Allowance or Student Loan
If the client is applying for a Student Allowance, Independent Circumstances Allowance or Student Loan you will need to:
- add a future suspension to the benefit for the Monday of the week that the client advises they will start receiving a Student Allowance, Independent Circumstances Allowance or Student Loan
For example, the client starts receiving a Student Allowance, Independent Circumstances Allowance, or Student Loan on Wednesday 15 June - add the future suspension for Monday 13 June. Student Allowance or Student Loan living costs (if nominated) will commence on Monday 13 June as these are always paid for the full week
Where there is early approval of Student Allowance, Independent Circumstances Allowance or Student Loan, StudyLink will check the future suspension date on Sole Parent Support and advise the case manager of any correction needed.
When Sole Parent Support has been cancelled from an incorrect date, StudyLink will establish overpayments.
